Oxfam is an international relief and development organization creating long-term solutions for poverty, hunger and social injustice—a confederation of 17 Oxfams working in more than 90 countries.
Oxfam’s America Unwrapped is a fun, green promotion of several charitable gifts that give back this holiday season. My favorite is the Give A Goat for $50. Did you know goats are an invaluable, sustainable resource for drought-stricken rural communities like Borena in South Ethiopia? Not only are goats a drought-resistent livestock, they also reproduce quickly and immediately provide families with milk.
Recipients of the Borena community are selected randomly and provided 5 vaccinated female goats and 1 vaccinated male goat. Since it’s most common for them to be responsible for the households, most beneficiaries are women. And what I really love about this program is that it’s empowering the role of women in the community at the same time it provides relief for the poor.
You can also give other gifts at Oxfam America Unwrapped. A vegetable garden, a pig, a bee, a pile of manure, or a tool. But I’m a bit partial to this cute little goat.
